Introduction
We attended the first online Aikido webinar held by our teacher Patricia Hendricks Sensei on 26 and 27 June 2020. Hendricks Sensei taught a fantastic class, and covered a lot of . The class was a Zoom meeting with about 35 attendees, from all over the world! Here in Colorado Springs, we opened the dojo and set up a laptop and wide angle video camera. Several of our students were able to attend. This approach worked pretty well! At 35 attendees, the class was the largest Aikido webinar we’ve attended to date, but Sensei managed to personally connect with everyone multiple times.
The Seminar…
Over the course of the four one hour sessions we worked on:
- Select Kumi-Jo (plus both “uchi” and “nage” henka)
- Select Ken-Tai-Jo – Including Hachi No Ken-Tai-Jo and henka
- Several Kumitachi
In addition to teaching basic Bukiwaza, Hendricks Sensei also worked on chaining together paired practices. In particular, on Saturday, we worked on chaining together several Ken-Tai-Jo and the first Kumitachi as a 3-person practice. This is a practice I have never seen before.
Lots of our Sempai were in attendance. It was great to see people we’ve known for decades, in addition to meeting some new people. It’s also fantastic to see, and be a part of, a large Aikido family that is adapting well to the current pandemic situation. We’re looking forward to Sensei’s next aikido webinar.
