Page Updated: April 28, 2026

Traditional Aikido of Colorado Springs is excited to host Patricia Hendricks Shihan for an Aikido Seminar on June 6-7 2026.  Please consider bookmarking this page as this will be the principal source for up-to-date seminar information!

This seminar is open to all styles of Aikido and all ranks!  We welcome everyone to come join us for a weekend of community and keiko!  If you’re brand new to Aikido and you’ve never attended a seminar, I can tell you from personal experience that you can’t choose a better first seminar.

Patricia Hendricks Shihan - 7th Dan (Aikikai)

Hendricks Shihan is celebrating 52 years of practicing/teaching Aikido in 2026. She holds a 7th Dan (Aikikai) and was awarded the title of Shihan (Master Teacher) in 2014. Hendricks Sensei was a direct student of Morihiro Saito Shihan from 1976 until Saito Sensei’s untimely passing in 2002. Morihiro Saito Sensei awarded Hendricks Shihan all five Aikido weapons scrolls, followed by a Menkyo Kaiden (license of total transmission) in Aikido weapons. Hendricks Sensei is currently dojo-cho of Aikido of San Leandro and Division Head of CAA (California Aikido Association) Division 1. Hendricks Sensei founded Aikido of San Leandro in 1984 and her dojo is one of the few dojos in the United States that offers uchideshi (live-in student) opportunities. Hendricks Sensei is known globally both her technical excellence and her accessible teaching style. She is also one of the best living examples of Iwama style Aikido.

Colorado Springs Climate

The weather in Colorado Springs is some of the best weather in the United States. Because we’re located at the base of the Front Range, our local weather tends to be dominated by atmospheric turbulence. There is a local saying “if you don’t like the weather… wait 15 minutes…” Colorado Springs sits at an altitude of about 6,500-7,000 feet and the region is considered a high-altitude desert environment. The temperature in early June ranges from 49°F-56°F at night to 74°F-84°F during the day. We will be spending time outdoors for weapons practice if the weather allows. The sun can be quite intense in the Springs in June. Sunscreen is strongly recommended outdoors regardless of the season. If you aren’t used to training at high altitude, please pay careful attention to your health. Local pharmacy and grocery stores sell inexpensive supplemental oxygen bottles if you’re experiencing altitude sickness symptoms. It’s also very important to pay careful attention to hydration. You can become critically dehydrated more quickly than you might be used to. Hydrate often!

Getting Here

The Colorado Springs Airport (IATA Code: COS) is a wonderful airport to fly into/out of. The airport is almost never busy and security delays are minimal. If you’re flying domestically within the United States, Southwest Airlines is a very reliable and less expensive option. Southwest provides two free checked bags, and most weapons bags qualify as standard luggage. United Airlines, Delta, and American Airlines also service Colorado Springs. Flying into/out of Denver International Airport (IATA Code: DEN) is also an option. Denver International Airport is approximately 90 minutes from Colorado Springs by car. The drive is a fairly easy drive, and while rush hour traffic can be a bit hectic, the drive is along the Front Range and it’s quite beautiful.

Local Hotels

AirBnB is a good option. Colorado Springs has a variety of unique AirBnB properties within a short distance of the city. Space Command/Space Force Headquarters is permanently located in the Springs and the number of available well-known hotel properties has grown quite a bit over the last few years. One of our favorite hotels is Kinship Landing. Each room is unique and they have some interesting options, including a “camping room” that provides a Colorado Glamping experience. The following is a list of local hotels that we’ve heard good things about… Disclaimer: Listing a hotel here does not constitute a recommendation by us. These are hotels that we’re familiar with. We’ve stayed at a few, but it’s been a while. Your mileage may vary!  Choose wisely!

Kinship Landing  415 N. Nevada Avenue Colorado Springs, CO 80903    –   website

Hyatt House – Colorado Springs Airport  2875 Zeppelin Road  Colorado Springs, CO 80916    –   website

Holiday Inn – Colorado Springs Airport – 1855 Aeroplaza Drive  Colorado Springs, CO 80916   –  website

MCM Elegante Suites  6450 N. Academy Blvd  Colorado Springs, CO 80918   –  website

Villa Motel at Manitou Springs  481 Manitou Avenue  Manitou Springs, CO 80829   –  website

Elegante Suites is the closest hotel to both the dojo and the weekend venue.   We’ve never spent time there, but we’ve gotten consistently good feedback on the hotel.   Kinship Landing is downtown, but it’s a fun hotel that’s centrally located near quite a few good restaurants/bars/etc.
