(Updated: September 15, 2024)

Traditional Aikido of Colorado Springs is excited to host Patricia Hendricks Shihan for a 3-day Aikido Seminar October 18th-20th 2024. Please bookmark this webpage as the principal source for up-to-date information related to the seminar.

About Patricia Hendricks Shihan

Hendricks Shihan is celebrating 50 years of practicing/teaching Aikido in 2024. She holds a 7th Dan (Aikikai) and was awarded the title of Shihan (Master Teacher) in 2014. Hendricks Sensei was a direct student of Morihiro Saito Shihan from 1976 until Saito Sensei’s untimely passing in 2002. Morihiro Saito Sensei awarded Hendricks Shihan all five Aikido weapons scrolls, followed by a Menkyo Kaiden (license of total transmission) in Aikido weapons. Hendricks Sensei is currently dojo-cho of Aikido of San Leandro and Division Head of CAA (California Aikido Association) Division 1. Hendricks Sensei founded Aikido of San Leandro in 1984 and her dojo is one of the few dojos in the United States that offers uchideshi (live-in student) opportunities. Hendricks Sensei is both a fantastic teacher and one of the best living examples of Iwama style Aikido. If you can only make one seminar this year, this is the one to attend.

Seminar Location

Special Keiko – Friday Evening (Oct 18, 2024)

Special Keiko is typically a more advanced class focused on topics like Kaeshi-waza or Henka-waza. The class is open to all ranks, however, the class typically moves quickly.

The Special Keiko session will be held at the Traditional Aikido of Colorado Springs dojo on Friday evening starting at 6:30PM. Our dojo is located at:

1863 N. Circle Drive
Colorado Springs, CO 80909

Detailed directions can be found on our contact page.

The dojo will open around 5:30PM for check-in and warmup.

Saturday/Sunday Seminar Location

The Saturday/Sunday seminar classes will be located at New Summit Charter Academy. Registration/check-in will start at 9:30AM on both Saturday and Sunday. We’ll be onsite at the school around 8:00AM to begin setup for the seminar.

7899 Lexington Drive
Colorado Springs, CO 80920

Registration and Payment

We expect to offer an early registration discount, in addition to both full weekend and single day registration. Friday evening class (tentative) will require separate registration. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. We are planning on providing an “at the door” registration/pricing option for last minute attendees.

We’re offering multiple registration options.

  • Full Weekend (Sat/Sun) – Early Registration – $145.00
  • Single Day (Sat or Sun) – Early Registration – $80.00
  • Special Keiko (Friday Evening) – $55.00 (Only available with purchase of full weekend or single day ticket)

A combination of an amazing response during early registration and the reduction in estimated venue costs is allowing us to hold registration fees at the early registration levels throughout the duration of the seminar. We also want this seminar to be available to the broadest number of students possible without concern for financial constraints.

We are able to accept Major Credit Cards (via either PayPal or Square) and personal checks. We prefer payment by either credit card or PayPal if possible. Personal checks will be accepted until October 6th. If you are paying by check, please make the check payable to “Traditional Aikido of Colorado Springs”.

Checks can either be mailed to:

3995 Saddle Rock Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80918

or… If you’re local to Colorado Springs, you can drop a check off at the dojo in person. When dropping off a check in person at the dojo, we’d prefer that you drop it off during class hours, just to make sure the check isn’t misplaced.

If you’re registering/paying last minute at the door we will be able to accept major credit cards and mobile transactions (PayPal only).

Travel Accommodations

Flying Into Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs Airport (IATA Code: COS) is a wonderful airport to fly into/out of. The airport is almost never busy and security delays are minimal. If you’re flying domestically within the United States, Southwest Airlines is a very reliable and less expensive option. Southwest provides two free checked bags, and most weapons bags qualify as standard luggage. United Airlines, Delta, and American Airlines also service Colorado Springs. Flying into/out of Denver International Airport (IATA Code: DEN) is also an option. Denver International Airport is approximately 90 minutes from Colorado Springs by car. The drive is a fairly easy drive, and while rush hour traffic can be a bit hectic, the drive is along the Front Range and it’s quite beautiful.

Local Hotels

AirBnB is a good option. Colorado Springs has a variety of unique AirBnB properties within a short distance of the city. Space Command/Space Force Headquarters is permanently located in the Springs and the number of available well-known hotel properties has grown quite a bit over the last few years. One of our favorite hotels is Kinship Landing. Each room is unique and they have some interesting options, including a “camping room” that provides a Colorado Glamping experience. The following is a list of local hotels that we’ve heard good things about… Disclaimer: Listing a hotel here does not constitute a recommendation by us. These are hotels that we’re familiar with. We’ve stayed at a few, but it’s been a while. Your mileage may vary!

Colorado Springs Weather

The weather in Colorado Springs is about the best weather in the United States. Because we’re located at the base of the Front Range, our local weather tends to be pretty turbulent. Colorado Springs sits at an altitude of about 6,500-7,000 feet. We are a high-altitude desert environment. It isn’t uncommon for us to get snow in mid to late October. The average temperatures in mid-October typically range from an average high of 63 degrees (F) down to an average low of 36 degrees (F). Bring warm fall clothing. Boots and a mid-weight jacket are a good idea. We will be spending time outdoors for weapons practice if the weather allows. Bring a hat/scarf if you get cold easily. Sunscreen is also recommended outdoors at altitude.

Local Attractions

Activities in the Colorado Springs region tend to be outdoor oriented. We have a huge number of amazing outdoor spaces, not the least of which is the 14,115 foot tall mountain that largely fills our Western view, Pikes Peak. If you’re visiting for a few days before/after the seminar, please consider spending some time visiting some of our local parks and open spaces! Some links to venues that we tend to enjoy are below…

Garden of the Gods

Paint Mines
